What movie has the best script?
This is an easy one…”Closer”. Whoever wrote it (can’t be arsed looking it up) captures perfectly the trials of falling in love, falling out of love and the utter hatred you may eventually feel for someone. The whole thing is beautifully tragic and each line is masterfully crafted.
This scene may be my favourite movie scene of all time. When she says, “Like you, but sweeter”…fucking hell. That is some amazingly brutal shit. And he ends the conversation in the most scathing fashion: “Now fuck off and die”. It’s incredible.
The emotion in that scene is wonderful. He’s torturing himself and she’s feeding it to him. It’s as complex as it is bruising.
And the whole film is like this. When Natalie Portman’s character tells Jude Law’s character he doesn’t love him and he desperately scrambles to fix things. It’s heart-wrenching. She’s so fucking blase and he just crumbles. When she says “I prefer you”, that’s one of the harshest lines in the film. She tells him she’s been fucking someone else and then she looks him square in the eyes and says, “I prefer you”. Grim as fuck.
Sure, Tarantino’s dope. But I like films with emotional resonance. In fact, I typically like scenes that are sad as fuck. Films with a realistic note to them. The final argument in “Blue Valentine” for example.
But nothing touches “Closer”. It’s in my top ten films of all time and it’s all in the script. Bloody great stuff.
